Meta Advertising: The Ads Manager, and One System for Two Surfaces

Boosting is not advertising. It is its simplest form, and its most expensive feature is that it hides every decision from you.

01 — Overview

Overview

Most of the people spending on advertising here have never opened the ads manager once — they boost a post, money leaves, likes arrive, and they have been repeating that monthly for years. The reason is not laziness: boosting is one button, and it sits under a post they are looking at anyway. What it costs is that the system decides for them what to ask people to do, who to show, where to appear, and in what structure results can be compared — and those four decisions are the whole of advertising.

The course also settles a question that wastes a lot of time: Facebook and Instagram are not two platforms, they are two surfaces of one system. So "how do I advertise on Instagram only?" is one decision inside the same manager — the same structure, objectives, audiences and billing — and there is no separate account, no separate skill, and no separate course to buy.

Then it builds the account that learns rather than the campaign that worked once: three levels each deciding one thing, an objective close to money rather than to engagement, an audience wide enough for the system to find, content rebuilt for each surface rather than moved to it, budget that survives the learning phase, and one variable tested at a time with the expectation written before the result.

02 — What you will learn

What you will learn

The four decisions boosting hides from you — and the three cases where boosting is still right

Why Instagram-only is a placement decision, not a platform decision

What each of the three levels decides, and why changing two at once teaches you nothing

Asking for the thing closest to money — and what to do when your sale happens too rarely

Honest narrowing against guesswork, and why exclusion matters more than selection

Retargeting as harvesting rather than planting — and the share it must never exceed

Three ratios, empty edges, and a promise readable in two seconds with no sound

The learning phase, why daily editing restarts it, and testing the offer before the placement

Questions, answered

I want Instagram ads only. Is there a separate course?

No, and that is one of the two things this course exists to settle. Facebook and Instagram are two surfaces of the same system: the same manager, the same three levels, the same objectives, the same audiences and the same billing. Advertising on Instagram only is one decision inside that system, made in the same place you make every other decision. So this course covers Instagram throughout, and lesson five covers what genuinely differs: the shape of content each surface expects. There is one other course for Instagram — “Instagram Advertising: From Boosting to Advertising” — and it is not a copy of this one: it is the on-ramp for someone who only boosts, sells in the direct messages, and has no website. If you already open the ads manager, this is your course and that one is not.

What is actually wrong with boosting posts?

Not the money — the blindness. Boosting decides four things for you: what it asks people to do, who it shows to, where it appears, and what structure the results sit in. So you cannot know why a boost worked or failed, which means you cannot repeat the good one or avoid the bad one, and every month starts from zero. The course does not tell you never to boost: it names three cases where boosting is the right tool — a near event, a post that already proved itself organically, and a cheap short test of an idea. What it refuses is boosting as your main way of selling.

I get engagement but no sales. Why?

Because you asked for engagement, and the system gave you exactly that. The objective is not an administrative label — it is the instruction: find me people who do this. Ask for engagement and it finds people who engage, who exist in large numbers and do not buy. The rule is to ask for the thing closest to money that you can measure and that happens often enough, and lesson three handles the hard case honestly: when your sale is too rare for the system to learn from, you step back exactly one place toward money, write down why you conceded, and watch your real sales beside the proxy — because a proxy that rises while sales do not is attracting the wrong people.

Why does it not tell me what budget to start with?

Because any figure I published would be from another market, another margin and another product, and would become a benchmark you measure yourself against on no basis. What the course gives instead is a rule that fits every size: start with what you can bear to lose for two full months, not with what you think is enough. Advertising does not give its answer in a week, and whoever starts with an amount that hurts stops before they know. And if two months is beyond you, the honest answer is to postpone — which is one of the four conditions in the Google Ads course, and the course refers you there rather than repeating them.

Where does it stop, and what does it leave to other products?

It covers one system and stops there. The four conditions that decide whether you should advertise at all are the Google Ads course. Judging this channel against another — windows, attribution models, the switch-off test — is "Cross-Platform Measurement", and this course only handles what reaching the system does to the optimisation itself. Ownership of the ad account, the page and the audiences is "Business and Ad Accounts", which comes before this. The margin you judge every channel by is "Reading Your Business Numbers". The page people land on after the click is the Technical SEO book. And one boundary is a hard limit rather than a division of content: no list is uploaded except of people who consented to that specific use, and the detail is in the "Personal Data Protection" book.
