Being Found by AI: How You Get Mentioned in Its Answers
People have started asking rather than searching. And when they ask, they get an answer — not a list of links.
What Actually Changed — and When This Does Not Concern You
By the end of this lesson you will be able to:
- Know the answer engine's three steps and which you control
- Understand that quoting happens to a passage, not a page
- Know when this area does not concern you at all
- Know that appearing in answers builds on being findable rather than replacing it
People have started asking rather than searching. **And when they ask, they get an answer — not a list
of links.**
And the difference is not cosmetic: an answer cites a handful of sources, and the rest of the pages do not
appear at all. Whoever ranked seventh in a search engine was sometimes seen; **whoever is not cited in an
answer is not seen at all**.
How an answer engine works — three steps
1. Retrieval. It looks for texts related to the question and gathers them.
2. Synthesis. It reads what it gathered and composes an answer.
3. Citation. It names some of what it relied on.
And you do not control the second. You cannot dictate how the answer is composed.
You do control the first and third: that your text exists and can be retrieved, **and that it is written
in a way that is easy to quote**.
And this course is about those two steps.
The sentence this course rests on
Your page is not quoted — a passage from it is.
Read it twice. Because everything you know about writing a page changes with it.
Your page may be excellent as a whole and have not one sentence quoted from it, because every paragraph
depends on what came before: "as we mentioned", "this means", "therefore". **And a paragraph pulled out of
its context that cannot stand alone is not quotable.**
And lesson three is entirely about this.
When this does not concern you — honestly
I work in this field. And I will tell you when not to spend on it:
1. If your business is entirely local footfall. A restaurant depending on people passing on the street, or
a shop in a market — your effort is better spent elsewhere.
2. If nobody is asking about your field. Lesson two teaches you how to check, before you begin.
3. And this is the most important: if you cannot be retrieved at all.
What cannot be retrieved cannot be quoted.
So if your site is not indexed, or its content only appears after software runs, **or you have no content at
all — the first step is not this course. The first step is existing.**
And this is not a detail, it is an order: appearing in answers is built on top of being findable, not
instead of it. And if your foundation is incomplete, "Technical SEO 101" is where you start — **and lesson six
returns to this**.
And what is a mention without a visit worth?
A practical question deserving a plain answer, because most of what you gain here is **a mention, not a
click**.
Three real values:
1. Entering the consideration set. Whoever asks "how do I choose a vendor" comes away with three names in
their head — and you are one of them or you are not. The decision comes later, and may reach you by an
entirely different route.
2. Being searched by name. Many people given a name then search for it. So the visit arrives, **but as
a search for your name rather than a click from the answer** — and you will not attribute it to this effort.
3. Compounding. Whoever is quoted once is quoted again: **a source that has been cited becomes likelier to
be cited** — and a mention pulls a mention.
And the honest constraint: you cannot attribute this precisely. There is no counter saying "a customer
came because you were mentioned in an answer" — and lesson seven is entirely about measuring in this
environment, and about measured rather than open-ended patience.
And what I will not do in this course
I will not name an answer engine or a tool.
And this is not evasion — it is the condition of the course staying valid. This field changes every few
months: engines appear and shut down, features are added and removed, **and any advice beginning with a
product name expires before you can apply it**.
And the mechanism does not change: retrieve, synthesise, cite. **Whoever understands it applies it to what
exists and what will.**
And what does not work — before you try it
Three things many people try that do not help:
- Keyword stuffing — it did not work in search, it does not work here, **and it makes your text worse for
reading and for quoting at once**
- Writing text "aimed at AI" separate from what people read — **text that is bad for humans is bad for
quoting**
- Buying mentions — treated in lesson five
What you will leave with
Four documents about your own business: a list of questions your buyer asks, a measurement log of your
mentions across months, a list of your rewritten pages, and a plan for your presence outside your own site
— and the last may be the most important, as lesson five explains.
Action steps
- Write the sentence and post it: a passage is quoted, not a page.
- Go honestly through "when this does not concern you" — and if an item applies, stop here.
- Check: are your pages even indexed? If not, start there.
- Open a page on your site and read one paragraph from the middle alone: does it make sense?
- Write nothing new before lesson two — measurement first.
That was the full sample — here is the rest
What you just read is one part. The full edition includes:
- All 8 lessons: measuring your mentions, the quotable passage, entity and consistency, off-site presence, the technical side, and measuring with no rank
- The hands-on task and quiz that close every lesson — neither is included in this sample
- Four documents you leave with, a 32-question audit, and a ninety-day plan
- A completion certificate in your name, in Arabic and English
